Ask a Portland Plumber: Do You Have Galvanized Piping?

Pipe Repair in Portland, OR

We recently had a customer who wanted to have his old, galvanized piping removed and replaced with new pipes. While this type of piping is durable, it’s known to corrode over time and need replacing.

This could be considered the number one way to determine if you have old plumbing. If you turn on the hot water in your old house and the pressure is low, the house probably has galvanized pipes that have corroded and plugged up.

But having good hot water pressure in your home doesn’t mean you should rule out galvanized piping. It’s possible that in previous years, only the bad pipes were replaced, leaving many old, galvanized pipes still in the house. These pipes more than likely will need to be replaced fairly soon.

If you think you have galvanized piping in your home that needs replacement, you have two options:

  • Replace all of your piping to eliminate future problems
  • Only replace problem areas to fix the immediate issue at hand.

Words of caution: If you choose to replace only the bad pipe, you’ll want to make sure you don’t have it replaced with another galvanized pipe. That will only extend the problem, not fix it.

At 3 Mountains Home Services, we’ll be sure to handle the replacement efficiently and at a cost that’s right for you. Call us today!
