Most Common Garbage Disposal Problems

We receive several calls from people who experience garbage disposal problems. Here are some common ones and what you can do about them.

  1. Doesn’t turn on: If this happens to you, check your circuit breaker or fuse box. If power is getting to the appliance, find the red reset button near the bottom. If it has popped out, that means the motor became too hot. You’ll probably have something jammed in the unit that needs to be removed. Turn off the disposal, clear the jam, turn the power back on, and hit the button. If the motor still won’t turn, you’ll probably need to replace the disposal.
  2. Leaking: First, check your drain connections. If that is where the leak is coming from, replace the rubber gasket. If you have just bought the disposal, make sure the ring near the sink flange is tight enough. You’ll probably need to replace the disposal, however, if the leak is coming from the body of the unit.
  3. Louder than normal noises: This commonly occurs when an object such as a metal utensil, a piece of glass, or a bone is stuck inside the unit. You could also have worn bearings or blades, or loose mounting screws. Call us and we’ll see whether you need a repair or a replacement.
